GARDEN CITY WINGS VARSITY ICE HOCKEY TEAM WINS THREE OF FOUR
The Garden City Wings Varsity ice hockey team played its home opener against Jericho on November 9, 2011 at the Bethpage Rink. The Wing’s captain, Albert Markopoulos, took just 29 seconds into the game to tally the first score on assists by Elias Georgas and Shawn Post and grab a lead the team would never give up. Markopoulos scored again on an assist by defense Shawn Post at 3:16 in the first period. Jericho got on the score board at 5:22 in the first period. P J Volz (assisted by Markopoulos), Markopoulos (assisted by Chris Arena and Rob Tomao), and Chris Arena ( assisted by Markopoulos and Georgas) added tallies to make the score 5 - 2 at the end of the first period. The second period saw the teams trade a pair of goals. Billy Barbaro (assisted by Billy Tranfaglia) and Markopoulos (assisted by Volz and Arena) scored for the Wings. The Wings added three more goals in the third period. Finding the net were Billy Tranfaglia (assisted by Markopoulos and Tomao), John Wein (assisted by Arena and Volz) and Markopoulos, his fifth goal of the game (unassisted). Tim Barbaro played a strong defensive game while 10th grade forwards Joseph Giarraputo, Anthony Mercandetti and Tim Michel pressured the opponents. Goalie Tom Marigliano held Jericho to three goals. The final score was 10 – 3 in favor of Garden City.

In a hotly contested, very physical game on November 12, 2011 at the Iceworks Rink the Wings played the Levittown Ice Falcons. At 6:09 of the first period Levittown was awarded a penalty shot and scored. At 0:34 of the second period Levittown scored again. The Wings continued to skate hard during the remainder of the period and 11th grader Chris Arena (assisted by 12th grader Albert Markopoulos) buried the biscuit at 8:45 of the period. During the third period, the Wings continued to press Levittown with shot after shot, but nothing found the back of the net. With just more than one minute left in the game, Garden City pulled it’s goaltender for an extra skater. Despite a barrage of shots, the Levittown goalie stood firm and the score remained 2 – 1 in favor of Levittown as the final buzzer sounded.

On November 13, 2011 the Wings faced off against the Golden Eagles of Bethpage at the Bethpage Rink. Team captain Albert Markopoulos opened the scoring (assisted by Elias Georgas) at the 1:47 mark. Bethpage then came back and tied the score. Defense Elias Georgas controlled the puck from behind his goal and skated end to end to score his second of the year (assisted by Rob Tomao and Billy Barbaro). Markopoulos added one more goal with only twelve seconds left in the first period to give the Wings a 3 - 1 lead. The ice seemed tilted in the Wings favor for most of the second period. 11th grader P J Volz scored (assisted by Joseph Giarraputo). Markopoulos scored (assisted by John Wein and Chris Arena) to record his second hat trick of the season. P J Volz tallied again unassisted. Markopoulos scored again (assisted by Tim Barbaro). 12th grader John Wein scored his first goal of the year (assisted by Tim Barbaro). 12th grader Billy Barbaro scored (assisted by Rob Tomao). The Wings led 9 - 2 at the conclusion of the second period. In the final period Billy Barbaro scored (assisted by defense Shawn Post). The biggest play of the night was a spectacular glove save by rookie goaltender Matt Lobasso midway through the period as he reached out to snare a slap shot just before the goal mouth. The final scored was 10 – 3 as the Wings outshot the Golden Eagles 30 - 14.

On November 15, 2011 the Wings traveled to the Bethpage Rink to play the Sailors of Oceanside. The game saw multiple lead changes despite the fact that the Wings took a commanding 3 – 0 lead through the first period. Goal scorers were: Albert Markopoulos (assisted by Shawn Post), P J Volz (unassisted) and Shawn Post (unassisted). The second period saw Oceanside chip back to tie the game. But with five minutes left, Markopoulos scored (assisted by Chris Arena) to put the Wings back on top at 4 - 3. Oceanside again rallied to tie the game early in the third period. But a minute later Markopoulos scored (assisted by Arena) to put the Wings back on top. Once more Oceanside came back to tie the game at 5 – 5. Just two minutes later Albert Markopoulos scored on a breakaway to put the Wings on top for good. With a 1:43 left in the final period, Oceanside pulled their goaltender without success. Markopoulos scored his fifth goal of the game (assisted by Chris Arena) into an empty net as the game ended. The final scored was 7 – 5 in favor of Garden City despite being outshot by the Sailors 28 - 23.
