Garden City Wings Ice Hockey Club
This fall, the Garden City Wings Varsity ice hockey team will begin their 36th season in the Nassau High School Hockey League.
The Wings return twelve players from last yearís team while adding eight additional players including six freshmen. Senior
Captain Patrick Donahue, Assistant Captains Tim Moynihan and Tom White, along with Spiros Markopoulos are back for their
fourth varsity season. Each will be counted on to provide experience & leadership to the eleven underclassmen on the roster.
Defense will be one of the teamís strengths this season, as the team returns all four defensemen from last yearís squad, while adding two additional blue-liners. Tim Moynihan led the team last season in ice time and contributed 16 points offensively. Tom White has a plus/minus rating of +6 over the previous three seasons. Sophomore Elias Georges was limited to five games last season before suffering a season ending knee injury, but was a +3 with four assists. Moynihan, Georges and White are expected to anchor the power-play and penalty killing units this year. Steady sophomore Robert Tomao returns following a strong freshman year. Rounding out the defense is Junior transfer Sam Bartels and Freshman Phillip Volz.
Junior David Wax is in his third season with the Wings and takes over the main goaltending duties this season. David has appeared in sixteen games during the previous two seasons earning five victories. Freshman Zach Bostrom moves up after three seasons on the middle school team to share the goaltending duties.
The team should be in good shape offensively despite losing 55% of last seasonís scoring due to roster turnover. The team will be led by last yearís leading scorer center Spiros Markopoulos. Spiros netted 15 goals with 11 assists last season. Helping Spiros will be his brother, Albert, who was limited to 3 games last season due to an early season injury. On the other wing will be smooth skating Pat Donahue who averaged more than a point a game last season. Senior Steven Lanciotti had five goals last season while being one of the teamís top penalty killers. Senior Beau Lardner returns to the Wings after spending a season playing in Canada. Beau will see time on both the power play and penalty killing units. Sophomore Billy Barbaro moves back to forward this season after filling in on defense last season because of the multiple injuries the team suffered last year. Billy contributed five assists last season and will see action at both center & wing. Junior Winger Tom Martis returns for his second season and contributed two goals last season, along with solid play in his defensive zone. Rounding out the forward lines are Sophomore Matthew Cotter and freshmen Christopher Arena, Matthew Greco, William Tranfaglia & John Wein.
Returning behind the bench for his fourth season as Head Coach is the pride of Toronto, Rich Peck. Coach Peck will be assisted by Wings alumni Brian Johnston (GCHS 2007).
The Wings opened the season last Friday night with a 9-4 win over Bellmore/Merrick. Goaltender David Wax had 13 saves in the victory. Patrick Donahue led the team with four goals. Both Tim Moynihan and Elias Georges registered a goal and two assists. Albert Markopoulos contributed a goal and an assist.. Billy Barbaro and Matthew Cotter both contributed goals while defensemen Sam Bartels and Robert Tomao had assists for Garden City.
Freshman Bill Tranfaglia was a +4 in his varsity debut while Steven Lanciotti won 58% of his faceoffs. The game also featured strong varsity debuts for Freshmen Philip Volz (+1) and John Wein. The Wings penalty killing unit led by Beau Lardner was 80% efficient.
The Wings second game is this Friday, November 13th at 9:45pm at Long Beach. The Wings take on Manhasset High School. Please visit www.gcwings.org for a complete game schedule or for additional information on the Wings.
