Varsity Ice Hockey Contends For Playoff Spot

Despite numerous injuries, the Garden City Wings Varsity Ice Hockey enters the final week of the season still contending for post-season play. Competing with four other schools for the last two playoff spots, the team will play its remaining four games within eight days as it completes the 2008-09 regular season schedule.

The team is led by Seniors Tom Greco, Eric Diller and Jim Georges. Tom Greco and Eric Diller have both played over seventy games during their four years on varsity and have combined to score 45 goals. Tom and Eric have been two of the best penalty killing forwards to skate for the Wings in many years. Both will finish their high school careers with a positive plus/minus rating. Tom currently leads the team with a +6 rating and is tied for second on the team with 13 goals.

Goaltender Jim Georges is playing his second season with the Wings and is recognized as one of the top goaltenders on Long Island. He is averaging less than three goals per appearance despite facing an average of two shots every three minutes. Sophomore David Wax has been splitting time in net for the Wings with Georges and has recorded 158 saves in eight games.

Injuries have left the Wings very short-handed at times during the season. Fourth leading scorer, Patrick Donahue, was the most recent casaulty and is out for the remainder of the season with a leg injury. Albert Markopoulos was limited to two games before a shoulder injury shelved him for three months. Defenseman Elias Georges had a plus 3 rating after five games before a knee injury ended his season.

Spiros Markopoulos leads the team with 14 goals and respresented the Wings in the Nassau-Suffolk All Star game. Winger Michael Borges is tied for second on the team with 13 goals and 18 points including a four goal game in January. Center Stephen Lanciotti has four goals and is second on the team with a plus four rating. First year wingers Thomas Martis and Matthew Cotter have both had solid seasons up front for the Wings.

Tim Moynihan has led a depleted defense, logging over 30 minutes of ice time during most games. Tim has a plus 3 rating while contributing 3 goals and 13 points offensively. Freshman Robert Tomao has had a solid first year on the Varsity level and has a plus two rating. Tom White has been limited to five games, but is now healthy for the playoff push. Freshman forward Billy Barbaro has done a great job filling in on defense for the team because of all of the team injuries.

The Wings next game is Sunday, February 22nd against Syosset High School. Game time is at 6:30pm in Bethpage. Please visit www.gcwings.org for a complete game schedule or for additional information on the Wings.
