Varsity Ice Hockey Starts Season With A Win

The Garden City Wings Varsity Ice Hockey team began their 36th season in the Nassau County High School Hockey League with a victory on Sunday, November 2nd. After graduating 11 seniors from last year's squad, the game featured 8 players dressing for their first varsity game. Senior Captain Tom Greco scored a power play goal assisted by Tom White in the middle of the first period to start the scoring. Locust Valley responded two minutes later to tie the game, but Tom Greco hit the net again, assisted from Tim Moynihan twelve seconds later to give GC a 2-1 lead.

Locust Valley tied the game five minutes into the second period. Tom Greco then completed his natural hat trick, assisted by senior Assistant Captain Eric Diller, thirty seconds later. Locust Valley scored twice in the last eight minutes of the period to hold a one goal lead after two periods.

The third period belonged to Garden City, as the Wings scored three unanswered goals. Spiros Markopoulos tied the game, assisted by Billy Barbaro. Assistant Captain Pat Donahue scored an unassisted goal for the game winner in the middle of period. Eric Diller scored a beautiful top shelf unassisted insurance goal with a minute to play to close out the scoring.

Goaltending is one of the strengths of this year's team and was a big factor in the victory. During the third period, senior goaltender Jim Georgas turned away many good scoring opportunities by Locust Valley. Georgas had 12 saves to earn the victory. Sophmore goaltender David Wax had 11 saves while in net for the first half of the game.

Tom Greco had a plus/minus rating of +3 for the game and won 75% of his faceoffs. Greco and Eric Diller had about half of the teams 26 shots on goal with each putting six shots on the Locust Valley net. Diller and Pat Donahue both were +2 for the game.

Defensively, strong performances were turned in by the four Wings defensemen. Juniors Tim Moynihan and Tom White start their third season with the varsity. Both finished last season with a strong +6 rating. Freshman Elias Georgas played well at both ends of the rink and showed his offensive strengths with several good offensive rushes. Freshman Robert Tomao was a +1 in his varsity debut.

Overall, the Wings were four for four in penalty kills and one for four on the power play. GC received strong games from several forwards making their varsity debuts. Albert Markopoulos and Billy Barbaro both helped to generate several good scoring opportunities. Stephen Lanciotti and Michael Borges had good games at both ends of the rink with winger Tom Martis doing a good job along the boards for GC.

The Wings next game is Monday, November 17th against Levittown High School. Game time is at 9:30pm at Cantiague. Please visit www.gcwings.org for a complete game schedule or for additional information on the Wings.
