Varsity Ice Hockey Wins Two During Holiday Weekend

The Garden City Wings Varsity Ice Hockey team took two games last weekend, despite having a short bench due to injuries and vacations,. On Saturday the team faced the Great Neck Bruins in an exhibition game. The Wings opened the scoring in the first minute of the contest as Brian Kiernan scored an unassisted goal. Five minutes later, Ryan Norell scored assisted by David Brown to put GC ahead by two goals. Great Neck stormed back and tied the score with two minutes left in the first period. Ryan Norell added an unassisted goal in the last minute of play to put GC ahead by one goal at the end of the first period.

Nick Greco scored a power-play goal midway through the second period assisted by Brian Kiernan. Towards the end of the second period, David Brown finished off a nice pass from Ryan Norell to put the Wings ahead by three goals at the end of the second period.

The Wings and Great Neck traded two goals apiece in the third period. Early in the period, David Brown scored an unassisted power-play goal, his second of the game. Brian Kiernan tallied the last GC goal midway through the third period assisted by Joe Scalise.

Goaltender David Logan was superb in the nets for the Wings. Logan faced 25 shots in the 7-4 victory. Five of the shots came from breakaways with Logan stopping three of those attempts.

On Sunday, the team faced-off against Sewanhaka High School. Ryan Norell scored the only goal in the first period assisted by Joe Scalise and Brian Kiernan. Wings goaltender Jeff Greco was especially sharp in the first period as GC struggled in their defensive zone and was out-skated for much of the first period.

Midway through the second period, Brian Kiernan scored an unassisted goal to give GC some breathing room. Despite the goal, Sewanhaka continued to control the play and generated many good scoring opportunities that were turned aside by goaltender Jeff Greco. With one second left in the period, the Wings scored a momentum turning goal. Matt Gaudiosi gained position in front of the Sewanhaka goal and redirected in a shot by Nick Greco. John Mendicino earned the other assist on the Gaudiosi goal.

Early in the third period, the Wings increased their lead to four on an unassisted Brian Kiernan goal. Sewanhaka spoiled the shutout five minutes into the third period off a scramble in front of the GC goal. Brian Kiernan completed his hat trick midway through the period on a rebound off a Matt Gaudiosi shot.

Jeff Greco had 23 saves in the 5-1 victory with many of those shots coming from good scoring angles. Greco had to bring his "A" game on Sunday as the Wings had none of their usual defensemen available for the game. Forwards Aaron Kim, Nick Greco, Ryan Norell and Brian Kiernan rotated as defensemen with occasional turns at center.

The other four skaters that dressed for the game were assigned the exhausting forechecking duties. Eric Diller, Matt Gaudiosi, Joe Scalise and John Mendicino rotated as these forwards. Each gave an outstanding effort, despite never getting the proper rest between shifts.

The Wings roster consists of Goaltenders Jeff Greco and David Logan; Defensemen Tom Rossidis, David Brown, and Anthony Bitetto; Forwards Max Auricchio, Eric Diller, Nick Greco, Tom Greco, Matt Gaudiosi, Brian Kiernan, Aaron Kim, Michael Lanciotti, John Mendicino, Ryan Norell, Kyle Seiferth and Joe Scalise.

The Wings next game is Friday, March 3rd at 9pm at the Iceworks rink in Syosset. Please visit www.gcwings.org for additional information on the Wings.
