Varsity Ice Hockey Drops Two

The Garden City Wings Varsity Ice Hockey dropped two games last week against two of the top teams in the league that had a combined 21-2-0 record coming into the games. The week started with GC facing-off against Bellmore/Merrick High School on Monday, January 16th. Midway through the first period Garden City was able to take advantage of a Bellmore/Merrick penalty as Ryan Norell blasted a shot into the top corner of the net off a pass from Brian Kiernan. Bellmore/Merrick came storming back with a flurry of shots and scored three times in the last four minutes of the period.

Garden City bounced back early in the second period. While on a powerplay, Brian Kiernan kept the puck alive at the blueline and kicked it over to Tom Rossidis. John Mendicino deflected Rossidis shot from the point into the net to make it a one-goal game. The Wings evened the score later in the period as Brian Kiernan got past the Bellmore/Merrick defense. Kiernan's breakaway attempt was saved by the goaltender but Ryan Norell skated hard to the net and was able to knock in the rebound.

The Wings gave up two goals in the third period. After pulling goaltender Jeff Greco for an extra skater with less than two minutes to play, Brian Kiernan scored off a pass from Tom Rossidis to cut the lead in half. The comeback fell short when Bellmore/Merrick was able to pick off a Garden City pass and score an empty net goal to complete the scoring.

The game featured a great effort by defensemen Tom Rossidis and David Brown who both logged a good amount of ice time. Forward Nick Greco gave an outstanding effort by filling in as the third defenseman in the game. Another strong game by goaltender Jeff Greco who made 45 saves in the contest, keeping Bellmore/Merrick three goals under their per game average.

Two nights later, the Wings played the undefeated and defending State Champion Long Beach High School. Long Beach opened the scoring 42 seconds into the game after the Wings allowed them several attempts at a rebound. The Wings regrouped and played a tighter defense the rest of the period. With less than a minute left in the period, Brian Kiernan won an offensive zone face off back to Ryan Norell. Norell's shot was deflected past the Long Beach goaltender by Kyle Seifert to tie the game.

The second period was ugly for Garden City as Long Beach scored five times with four of those goals coming in a two minute time span. Ryan Norell scored the only goal for the Wings that period assisted by Nick Greco.

The Wings played a much stronger third period. Brian Kiernan scored off a pass from John Mendicino early into the period with Ryan Norell also assisting on the play. The period featured some good end-to-end action along with solid checking from both sides. Midway through the period, Eric Diller pumped some energy onto the GC bench by delivering a crushing hit on a Long Beach player who was off balance as a result of a check by Kyle Seiferth. Long Beach added a late goal with under a minute to play to complete the scoring in their 7-3 victory.

Good effort by the defense against one of the top teams. Once again the team played without the full compliment of defensemen as Anthony Bitetto was lost early in the game with a concussion. Defensemen Tom Rossidis, David Brown, and Aaron Kim all had solid games in front of goaltender David Logan. David Logan had 38 saves in the nets for Garden City.

Strong game by forwards Tom Greco, Nick Greco, and John Mendicino who excelled at both ends of the ice. Mike Lanciotti delivered some hits for GC and showed some strength in the corners for the Wings. Matt Gaudiosi gave the team several good shifts on the left wing and worked hard in front of the offensive net. Joe Scalise, the team's recent acquisition from the roller hockey leagues, is proving to be a valuable addition as he continues to make a strong transition to ice.

The Wings roster consist of Goaltenders Jeff Greco and David Logan; Defensemen Tom Rossidis, David Brown, Anthony Bitetto and Aaron Kim; Forwards Max Auricchio, Eric Diller, Nick Greco, Tom Greco, Matt Gaudiosi, Brian Kiernan, Michael Lanciotti, John Mendicino, Ryan Norell, Kyle Seiferth and Joe Scalise.

The Wings next game is Monday January 30th at 9pm at the Iceworks rink in Syosset. Please visit for additional information on the Wings.
