Varsity Ice Hockey Splits Early January Games

The Garden City Wings Varsity Ice Hockey split their first two games of the New Year. The year started off well when the team faced-off against Massapequa High School on January 3rd. After a scoreless first period, the second period featured the Wings playing their strongest period of the year. Brian Kiernan scored off a drop-pass from Ryan Norell on the first shift of the period. Five minutes later, Nick Greco scored off a nice pass from John Mendicino. With five minutes remaining in the period Ryan Norell scored, assisted by Brian Kiernan and John Mendicino.

Twenty seconds into the third period, Brian Kiernan won an offensive face-off back to defenseman David Brown. Ryan Norell redirected Brown's point shot into the Massapequa net which closed out the scoring in the game, a 4-0 victory for GC. It was a well-earned shutout victory for Goaltender Jeff Greco. Greco had 24 saves for the evening and reduced his Goals Against Average to an excellent 2.17 for the season. Credit for the shutout should also be directed to defensemen Tom Rossidis, David Brown, Anthony Bitetto and Aaron Kim, along with a strong back-checking effort from the forwards.

On Friday January 6th the team skated against Oceanside High School. Despite out-playing Oceanside for most of the first period, the Wings found themselves trailing by one after the first period. Early in the second period, Ryan Norell evened the score when he knocked in the rebound off a Brian Kiernan shot. After Oceanside scored twice during the middle of the period, Max Auricchio made it a one-goal game when he scored with twenty-six seconds left in the period with assists going to Ryan Norell and Brian Kiernan.

The third period belonged to Oceanside, who scored twice in the beginning of the period. Ryan Norell scored his second goal of the game, assisted by Brian Kiernan, with four minutes left in the game to pull the Wings to within two goals of Oceanside. Oceanside added two more goals in the last minute of the game, one with goaltender David Logan pulled for an extra skater, for a 7-3 victory. David Logan has 20 saves in the game for Garden City.

The Wings roster consist of Goaltenders Jeff Greco and David Logan; Defensemen Tom Rossidis, David Brown, Anthony Bitetto and Aaron Kim; Forwards Max Auricchio, Eric Diller, Nick Greco, Tom Greco, Matt Gaudiosi, Brian Kiernan, Michael Lanciotti, John Mendicino, Ryan Norell, Kyle Seiferth and Joe Scalise.
