Garden City Wings Ice Hockey Club
The Garden City Wings Varsity split the four games played in the month of December. On December 5th, the
team took on Wantagh/Seaford High School. Ryan Norell gave the Wings an early lead scoring a goal five
minutes into the game, assisted by Brian Kiernan. In the second period, Wantagh/Seaford scored twice to
take a lead they would never give up. Wantagh/Seaford added a late goal in the third period for a 3-1
victory over the Wings. Goaltender Jeff Greco had 19 saves in the game.
On December 12th, the Wings played Jericho High School. Once again the Wings got on the scoreboard first. Nick Greco scored two minutes into the game, assisted by Kyle Seiferth. The lead was short-lived, as Jericho stormed back with two goals three minutes later to take a 2-1 lead over GC. Despite out-shooting Jericho 26-11 over the next two periods, the Wings could not get a tying goal and the game ended for a 2-1 Jericho victory. Goaltender David Logan had a strong game in the nets for GC, making 21 saves during the evening.
On December 15th, the Wings skated past Cold Spring Harbor High School for an 8-4 victory in a penalty filled contest. During the game, the Wings played the equivalent of a full period with a man in the penalty box and gave up three CSH power-play goals. Goaltender Jeff Greco made 23 saves for GC in a very wide-open game. GC was led offensively by Ryan Norell (3 goals, 3 assists) and Brian Kiernan (4 goals, 2 assists). Freshman Eric Diller had the other goal for GC, his first varsity goal. Defensemen Anthony Bitetto (2 assists) and Tom Rossidis had assists during the evening for GC.
On December 19th, the Wings faced Bethpage High School. Max Auricchio gave GC a lead two minutes into the game, assisted by John Mendicino. Brian Kiernan added an unassisted goal in the last minute of the first period to give GC a 2-0 lead. Bethpage scored the only goal of the second period to make it a 2-1 game. Max Auricchio scored an unassisted goal to give GC some breathing room early in the third period. Mid-way through the third period Auricchio completed his hat trick on an assist from Brian Kiernan. Jeff Greco had 24 saves in net for GC, including a "Dominik Hasek" style stop on a third period Bethpage breakaway attempt.
Overall it was a good month for the young Garden City squad. Defensemen Tom Rossidis, David Brown, Anthony Bitetto and Aaron Kim, all sophomores, are playing more cohesively together. Offensively the team has struggled at times, but improved in the last two games of December. The forwards consist of Max Auricchio, Eric Diller, Nick Greco, Tom Greco, Matt Gaudiosi, Brian Kiernan, Michael Lanciotti, John Mendicino, Ryan Norell, Kyle Seiferth and Joe Scalise. Goaltending has been a strong point for GC this season, with the responsibilities shared by David Logan and Jeff Greco who have a combined 2.28 GAA.
The Wings next games are Tuesday, January 3rd at 9:00pm and Friday January 6th at 10:30pm. Both games will be played at the Iceworks rink in Syosset. Please visit www.gcwings.org for additional information on the Wings.
