Varsity Ice Hockey Wins

The Garden City Wings took the ice against the Sewanhaka School District varsity team on Sunday, November 27th. The Wings had the edge in play early in the first period, but could not take advantage of several good scoring opportunities. With five minutes remaining in the period, Sewanhaka received a too many men on ice penalty. The Wings quickly took advantage as Ryan Norell scored ten seconds into the penalty. Max Auricchio and Brian Kiernan assisted on the goal. The first period ended with no other scoring as GC led 1-0.

The Wings struck early in the second period as Max Auricchio scored assisted by Brian Kiernan. Midway through the period, as a Sewanhaka penalty expired, GC increased their lead to 3-0 as Brian Kiernan deflected in a Ryan Norell shot. Max Auricchio also assisted on the goal.

The third period started with GC being called for a high sticking penalty. Sewanhaka scored eight seconds into the penalty to trim the GC lead to 3-1. Four minutes later GC answered back as Tom Rossidis scored assisted by Ryan Norell. Forty seconds later, GC increased their lead off a well executed break out play. Brian Kiernan scored assisted by Ryan Norell and Aaron Kim. Three minutes later Kiernan scored again to complete his hat trick, assisted by John Mendicino and Kyle Seiferth.

With 5 minutes remaining in the game, Sewanhaka was awarded a penalty shot on a GC tripping penalty. Wings goaltender David Logan played the fake by shooter perfectly, making a left pad save. With a little more than two minutes remaining, Brian Kiernan got the puck over to Eric Diller, who was back for his first shift since absorbing a crushing check earlier in the period. Diller earned his first varsity point by sliding the puck over to John Mendicino who scored his second goal of the season to close out the scoring giving GC a 7-1 victory.

Goalie David Logan had a strong game in nets for GC stopping 23 of 24 shots. Logan was especially sharp in the third period as GC was whistled for six penalties, which resulted in several good scoring opportunities for Sewanhaka. Overall, GC successfully defended seven of eight penalties during the game. Good work by forwards Tom Greco, Nick Greco, John Mendicino, and Eric Diller on the penalty-kill units.

Strong defensive game by blueliners David Brown and Tom Rossidis, who combined with a rotation of forwards Ryan Norell, Aaron Kim, and Max Auricchio to solidify the GC defense. Tom Rossidis had a plus-minus rating of plus five for the game and is tied with Ryan Norell for the team lead at plus eight.

Offensively Kyle Seiferth had a big night, finishing the night with a plus three rating. Tom Greco and Nick Greco both played excellent two-way hockey for GC. Matt Gaudiosi and Mike Lanciotti worked hard to get themselves each a scoring opportunity. Joe Scalise also had several good shifts in his varsity debut for GC.

The Wings next game is Monday, December 5th at 9:00pm at the Iceworks rink in Syosset. Please visit www.gcwings.org for additional information on the Wings.
