Wings Middle School Team Skates Into Playoffs
The Garden City Wings Middle School ice hockey team finished its regular season with a 4 - 4 tie with the Roslyn Bulldogs on March 13 and a 12 - 0 victory over the Syosset Braves on March 20. Both games were played at the Iceworks rink. The Wings ended in 6th place in the Blue Conference of the High School Hockey League of Nassau County, with a record of 7 wins, 9 losses and 2 tie. The team starts playoff games on March 24.

Although the score board displayed a tie at the conclusion of the March 13 game against 3rd ranked Roslyn, it was clearly a psychological victory for the Wings. Due to injuries and absences the team played “iron man” hockey with just six skaters and goal keeper, Thomas Guerrero, during the entire game. Anthony Mercandetti and Joseph King played both forward and defense; John White and Liam Gribbin played forward; and Kenny Nygaard and Claudia Caracciolo played defense.

Defense Shawn Post escapes the forecheck. The Wings dominated the Braves on March 20, scoring seven goals in the first period. 8th grade forward Chris DeAngelis scored seven points, including a natural hat trick plus one. 8th grade defense Shawn Post scored a natural hat trick in the second period. 8th graders Anthony Mercandetti and Timmy Michel focused on their passing skills with Mercandetti registering three assists. 6th grade foward Joseph King had the third hat trick for the team plus one assist. Forward Joseph Giarraputo ably helped the team by playing defense. 7th grade defense Kenny Nygaard had one goal and two assists while 8th grade center John White had one goal and one assist.
