Wings Middle School Ice Hockey Team Skates Into Playoffs
The Garden City Wings Middle School ice hockey team finished February with a 5-5 tie with the Wantagh/Seaford Baymen on February 27 at the Iceworks rink. The Wings demonstrated their improvement during the season as they had previously lost to the same team in mid-November. The Wings are in 4th place in the Blue Conference of the High School Hockey League of Nassau County, with a record of 6 wins, 6 losses and 1 tie. The team has three more regular season games before heading into the playoffs during the third week of March.

Wantagh/Seaford plays a physical game and it was displayed early in the first period with a solid open ice check to the chest of Wings forward, Joseph King. King continued to play through the game depite a later check from behind at 6:52 of the first period which sent him to the bench for the remainder of the period. Wantagh/Seaford paid a stiff price for multiple penalties during the first period of play as Garden City scored three power play goals. The first, an unassisted wrist shot from the top of the face-off circle by defense Shawn Post; the second, by center John White with the assistance of Post and 7th grade wing Liam Gribbin and the third, by forward Anthony Mercandetti with assists from John White and Liam Gribbin.

Despite staving off multiple close range shots, five pucks found their way past the Wings goalie Thomas Guerrero during the second period, while one goal was tallied by Wings forward Anthony Mercandetti with assists from Shawn Post and 6th grader Joseph King.

Facing several furious assaults during the third period, the combination of Garden City’s defensive trio of 7th grader Kenny Nygaard, 6th grader Sonny Caracciolo and 8th grader Shawn Post and 6th grade goalkeeper Thomas Guerrero never faltered and the Baymen were shut out during the final period. 7th grade forward Claudia Caracciolo continued to force the Wings attack by skating or dumping the puck deep into the Wantagh/Seaford defensive zone. Garden City put the tying puck in the net with six minutes left in the game on an unassisted shot by 8th grade center John White.
