Wings Middle School Team Starts Year With A Win
The Garden City Wings Middle School ice hockey team began the New Year with a 7-6 win over Bethpage/Farmingdale on January 2 at the Iceworks rink. That game marked the fourth consecutive victory for the Middle School Wings, who have previous wins against Cold Spring Harbor, Roslyn and Syosset. The Wings are in 2nd place in the Blue Conference of the High School Hockey League of Nassau County, with a record of 6 wins and 4 losses.

The Wings are anchored by their 6th grade goalkeeper, Thomas Guerrero, who is tied for 1st place in the conference with a goals against average of 4.67.

8th grader Sean Post is the veteran of the defense and the highest goal scorer of all defense players in the conference. His ability to join the forwards in the attack is enabled by his 7th grade partner, Kenny Nygaard, whose confidence and reliable play at the blue line continues to improve and has resulted in his participation in the Lighthouse Tournament. Two 6th graders are the building blocks of the team’s defense, Sonny Caracciolo and Joseph King. Sonny’s spirited skating and infectious enthusiam buoy the team and he leads all 7th graders on the team in penalties. Joseph King started the season as a wing with the team’s highest number of assists. A few games into the season Joseph realized he gets more ice team and improves his overall skating by playing defense and he has never looked back.

The 8th grade forward line of Anthony Mercandetti, Chris DeAngelis and John White includes two of the top five scorers in the conference, with an average of 4.65 goals per game. The next forward unit consist of 8th grader Joseph Giarraputo and 7th graders Christopher White and Claudia Caracciolo. Joseph Giarraputo’s desire to skate to the front of the net has resulted in the highest number of deflection goals on the team. Center Chris White is the team’s “sniper” with a shooting percentage of .381. Claudia Caracciolo leads all 7th graders on the team with an average of 2.5 points per game. 8th grader Timmy Michel and 7th grader Liam Gribbin round out the teams complement of forwards. Both skaters give their best efforts and consistently skate to the net on the attack.

Sean Post will be playing defense in the Middle School Lighthouse Cup game between the Nassau County and Suffolk County Middle School All-Stars which will be played at the Nassau Coliseum on Monday, January 18 at 4:45 p.m.

The Middle School team encourages all students in grades 6 through 8 to join for the Spring season which starts in March.
