Wings MS Team Wins Two Over Superbowl Weekend

Superbowl weekend was fortuitous for the Garden City Wings Middle School Ice Hockey team as it registered two wins over north shore rivals Roslyn and Syosset. The Wings have an 8 - 6 overall League record as they head into the final two months of play of the '07 - '08 winter season.

On February 2, 2008 the Wings faced off against the Roslyn Bulldogs. Fine passing from his linemates and the determination to skate to the front of the net resulted in a "hat trick plus one" for seventh grade center Christopher Arena, who scored two goals in both the first and second periods. The Roslyn team struck first, but the remainder of the period, and the game, favored the Wings. Seventh grade forward Matt Greco scored on an assist from sixth grade forward Tim Michel and sixth grade center John White scored with an assist from sixth grade defense Liam Fitzgerald. Seventh graders Mark Brady, Tyler Biscone and Ryan Costigan all were credited with assists on the two goals by Arena as the first period ended with the score 4 - 1. Roslyn was again the first to score in the second period. However, forwards Matt Greco and Tyler Biscone soon answered on passes from John White. Chris Arena's two goals in the second were scored after passes from sixth grade forward Conor Gallagher and defense Liam Fitzgerald and Mark Brady. The score after two periods was 8 - 2. In the third period seventh grade defense Mark Brady scored with an assist from versatile seventh grader Jack Worstell, who played defense during this game. Sixth grade goalkeepers Cody Mackston and Adam Hartog continued to show their progress as they allowed just two goals and one goal, respectively. The game ended with a final score of 9 - 3 in the Wings favor.

On February 3, 2007 the Wings played the Syosset Braves. The Wings were determined to avenge a one goal loss suffered in January at the hands of the Braves. Team passing and accurate shooting by all four defense were the keys to victory. Seventh grade center Conor Gibbons started the scoring with assists from John White and Adam Hartog, who skated as a forward for the first time this season. Eighth grade defense Brooke VanValkenburg tallied two unassisted goals on strong shots from the point leaving the score 3 - 1 after the first period. Forward Ryan Costigan scored just forty seconds into the second period. Eighth grade defense Robert Tomao and Liam Fitzgerald added two more unassisted goals and the score stood at 6 - 2 after the second period. Forwards Chris Arena (with the assist from Mark Brady), Conor Gibbons (unassisted) and Ryan Costigan (with the assist from Robert Tomao) added three more goals in the third period. Defense Mark Brady also added a goal during the third period. Goalminders Cody Mackston and Zachary Bostrom allowed just two goals each as the game ended with a final score of 10 - 4 in favor of the Wings.
