Wings Middle School Team Ties Wantagh-Seaford

The Garden City Wings Middle School Ice Hockey team tied powerful Wantagh-Seaford 6 - 6 on December 9, 2006 at Iceworks in Syosset, N. Y.

Mid-way through the season the Wings have a record of: 9 - 2 - 1.

The game was exciting from start to finish as neither team ever had more than a one goal lead. Rookie goalie Zachary Bostrom played with determination for the entire game due to the illness of eighth grade goalkeeper David Wax. The Wings started the scoring in the first period with a power play goal by center Chris Arena on a pass from sixth grade back Mark Brady. The first period ended 2 - 1 in favor of the Wings as they tallied again with a goal by sixth grader Conor Gibbons on assists by Andrew Morra and Chris Arena. Unfortunately, eighth grade forward Ryan Zim will be on the disabled list after a check from behind near the end of the first period caused two fractures in his left wrist.

Both teams scored twice in the second period. Wing Conor Gibbons again scored with assists from forwards Andrew Morra and eighth grader Ricky Yegelwel. Sixth grade center Chris Arena again scored, this time on an unassisted breakaway during a penalty kill. Wing sixth grader Matt Greco continued to demonstrate his improved skills as he filled in for the injured Ryan Zim. Eighth grade backs Alex DeMolina and Bobby Wallace patrolled the blue line and showed their improved regrouping abilities in the neutral zone. Eighth grade wing Mike Borges continued his fine play in front of the opponents net by drawing the attention of multiple defenders so his teammates increased their scoring opportunities. Seventh grader Albert Markopoulos continued his stellar passing skills. Seventh grade wing Daniel Marino was unavailable for this game as he served a one game suspension earned during the prior game. Score after two periods: 4 - 3 in favor of the Wings.

In the third period the crowd was treated to three tie scores.

Wantagh-Seaford tallied first. Two minutes later forward Ricky Yegalwel buried the puck with the help of sixth grader Andrew Morra and eighth grader Ken Boudreau. Wantagh-Seaford scored two more goals, the last with seven minutes left in the game. The Wings set the stage for a dramatic finish as they pulled their goalkeeper after calling a time out with ninety seconds left in the game. With less than one minute left in the game the Wings were trailing by one goal, the Wings goalkeeper was on the bench and the puck was passed to back Ken Boudreau. Ken's powerful slap shot from just above the face-off circle passed through a crowd of players and found the back of the opponent's net. Final score: 6 - 6.
