Wings Middle School Team Finishes Month With 6 - 0 Record

The Garden City Wings Middle School Ice Hockey team compiled a 6 - 0 record during the first month of the '06 - '07 winter season. During October of 2006 the team scored an average of 9.83 goals per game, while allowing an average of just 1.66 goals per game.

The team is anchored by eighth grade goalkeeper David Wax, who has permitted just four goals in twelve periods of play. Rookie goalie Zachary Bostrom has allowed only six goals in seven periods.

With the USA Hockey emphasis on a more "open" game style this season, the offense has exploded with seven hat tricks spread among three players. Seventh grade center Albert Markopoulos has scored a hat trick in each of the three games he has participated in. Not to be outdone, eighth grade center Eric Hansen has scored two hat tricks and nine goals in five games. Rookie center Chris Arena has scored four goals and, most impressively, leads all forwards with eight assists. Forward Ricky Yegelwel has energized the team with his ability to play center and wing, scoring four goals and supplying six assists in five games. Forward linemates Michael Borges and Daniel Marino have used their "muscle" and athletic experience from other sports to great advantage in front of the opponent's goal to tally six goals each and have assisted in a total of eleven more. Quick sticks and stealthy skating have been the tools employed by wing partners Billy Barbaro and Conor Gibbons to score two goals each and provide four assists each. Although sidelined by illness during September and the first half October, eighth grader Ryan Zim has started to regain his strength and has contributed one goal and one assist in three games. Rookies Jack Worstell and Matt Greco both come to the Wings with family histories of athletic accomplishment and early indications are that they will carry on their family traditions. Jack has tallied two goals in six games. Matt, sidelined with a sports injury for most of October, was only able to play in one game and has one assist.

The backs have proved the adage that "the best defense is a good offense". Ken Boudreau is tied with all players for goals scored with eleven, including two hat tricks in five games. Ken also leads the team with eleven assists and is tied with eight penalties. Blueliners Bobby Wallace and Mark Brady have shown great improvement in controlling the puck in the neutral zone and initiating the defense zone breakout and have each tallied one point. Eighth grader Alex DeMolina continues to improve his skill at keeping the front of the goal clear of unwanted forwards.

The Wings Ice Hockey Club encourages all students to attend their games at the Iceworks rink in Syosset. All skaters in grades six through twelve interested in playing competitive ice hockey and adults interested in coaching are invited to check our website at and to contact our General Manager via e-mail at: GO WINGS!!
