Wings Middle School Hockey Wins Season Opener

On Sunday October 2nd, The Garden City Wings' Hockey Middle School team opened their ninth season with an exciting 9-6 victory over Port Washington. The Wings dominated throughout the game, out-shooting Port Washington 38-24. Head Coach Richard Peck was very pleased with the teamwork, determination and sportsmanship of the team.

The Wings took an early lead with an opening goal from Spiros Markopoulos. The Wings never lost their momentum out-shooting and out -scoring Port Washington every period. The forwards kept Ports' defense very busy resulting in four goals for Albert Markopolous, a hat-trick for Spiros Markopolous and one goal for Ryan Williams. Nolan McKeown, Tim Moynihan, Tom White and Patrick Donahue played an aggressive defensive reducing the shots on goal. Playing an offensive blue line resulted in one goal from Tim Moynihan and an assist from Nolan McKeown. Goal tenders James Morra and James Ross both played exceptionally well with 18 heart stopping saves.

LThe Garden City Wings Middle School team, recruits their players from the Garden City and West Hempstead school districts. Currently the Wings have sixteen skaters this season and are still looking for new recruits. Many of the players have returned from the spring season with three new players joining the team. New to the Wings team are forwards Anthony Adipietro, Alexis DeMolina, and Ryan Williams. Returning eighth grade goalies, James Morra and James Ross will be supported by the returning eighth grade defensemen Tim Moynihan, Nolan McKeown, Patrick Donahue and Tom White.

The Wings' returning forwards are eighth graders Spiros Markopoulous, and Steven Garger. The teams seventh grader forwards are Francesca Giammona and Christian Knoch. A welcome addition to the team are the sixth graders William Barbaro, Daniel Marino and Albert Markopoulos.

Head Coach Richard Peck is on his eighth year coaching the Middle School Wings with the help of returning Assistant Coach Joe Brown. The Wings practice at Iceworks Arena, the practice rink for the NHL Islanders located in Syosset. The Middle School league games are mainly played in Nassau County and in Iceworks Arena.
